How Porn and Masturbation can Become a Dual Addiction

Compulsive masturbation and pornography addiction are very real issues for the person who suffers from one or both. Both can be debilitating and many times there are unfortunate consequences for those who have no control over either of these behaviors. In most cases, both of these types of sexual acting out are isolative and secretive. It’s also very rare for a person who suffers from one or both of these addictions to seek help. Unfortunately, an addiction to one will likely lead to an addiction to both.

The road to compulsive masturbation and porn addiction is not always easily recognized. In fact, most people suffering from these addictions don’t realize it’s a problem until these hidden behaviors cause job-related, legal, health or relational issues. Most cases of pornography addiction begin with recreational viewing of pornography. People tend to use it as a way to spice up a relationship or for excitement and pleasure. In most cases, masturbation and climax become a part of the pornography viewing process. Eventually, the “high” caused by viewing small amounts of porn becomes addictive, becomes a form of self-medication and replaces real intimacy.

Masturbation is generally tied to viewing pornography, and as the addiction to porn grows, so does addiction masturbation. These actions become addictive due to excitement and arousal and the endogenous chemicals released by the brain, which produce a euphoric feeling throughout the body. Masturbation to climax often intensifies these feelings. Since our brains form habits very quickly, it becomes clear why these behaviors become compulsive.

For the individual afflicted with one or both of these addictions, the road to recovery can be long and arduous. As a person’s addiction to pornography becomes stronger, the images he or she views become permanently imprinted on the brain. This makes it nearly impossible for the addict to force the images or thoughts from his or her mind. Since these thoughts or images can be triggers for the person suffering from these addictions, it is incredibly hard for them to break the cycle.

Fortunately, there are treatment programs for people suffering from compulsive masturbation and porn addiction. Treatment should begin with a thorough psychiatric evaluation in order to find out if there are underlying traumatic issues that may be at the root of the addiction. These may require treatments that differ from the treatment for pornography and masturbation addiction. Treatment usually includes some form of abstinence agreement, which includes abstaining from any type of sexual activity, viewing of pornography, chat room visits or related activities. The treatment should also be coupled with a 12-step or faith-based support system.

Pornography addiction and compulsive masturbation are generally dual addictions. However, people who suffer from them can get help. If you suffer from one or both of these issues, seek the help you need before it becomes a problem that affects the relationships and things in your life that are important to you.
